What You Need to Know About CCW Insurance Coverage

Jump To:

When you concealed carry, you prepare for the worst possible outcome at any given moment. Whether it's concealed carry in your car or concealed carry at home, you carry a gun to defend yourself and your loved ones from unforeseen threats.

You are not alone. Many are looking for the same peace of mind. According to the Crime Prevention Research Center, 2021 saw the total number of gun permits rise above 21.5 million, a 48% increase since 2016.

However, while you may prepare to fight for your life, you also need to prepare to fight the legal battles that you will face after using your firearm in self-defense.

Right or wrong, most self-defense actions involving concealed carry weapons wind up in court to decide if the concealed carrier acted in defense or malice.

CCW Insurance Is Good To Have If Anything Happens

Concealed carry insurance exists for these exact situations. It’s designed to help law-abiding concealed carry citizens who act in self-defense face criminal and civil charges.

If you have your CCW or have a firearm at home that you would use in a self-defense situation, it’s essential to have a base knowledge of concealed carry insurance and why you might need it.

Remember, this is not legal advice. For more information on the legal proceedings of a self-defense case, start by talking with your CCW instructor or a lawyer who has experience in these types of cases.

What Is Concealed Carry Insurance?

Like any other form of insurance, concealed carry insurance is designed to combat the liability costs of performing a specific action, like driving a car. In this case, using lethal force is the action in question.

Concealed carry insurance is designed to cover the legal expenses that come with the criminal charges and civil suits you may face after using your firearm to defend yourself.

What does CCW Insurance actually cover?

Here are just a few of the legal expenses you may incur:

  • Bail bond expenses
  • Attorney retainer and hourly fees
  • Court and legal fees
  • Witness, deposition and investigative fees

All of these fees are costly and can add up quickly. Many times, they can reach several hundred thousand dollars.

Once you clear criminal proceedings for your self-defense action, you may be served civil lawsuits from family members or other involved parties. Civil cases also include attorney and court fees. If any suits win, you will have to pay damages to the plaintiff or appeal fees to take the case to a higher court.

Even if you are completely in the right for your action

Learning What Concealed Carry Insurance Is NOT.

Concealed carry insurance or CCW insurance is designed to provide coverage for using lethal force in self-defense and self-defense alone. Concealed carry insurance is not designed to do the following:

  • Cover for murder. Concealed carry insurance is only meant to help in situations where the person was using lethal force in self-defense. It doesn’t give people with a firearm a free pass to harm others without proof of a life-threatening situation.
  • Cover unlawful discharge of a weapon. CCW insurance doesn’t cover legal expenses for the reckless discharge or use of a firearm in a designated no-firearm zone
  • Cover firearm negligence. If a child is harmed by mishandling a firearm or you injure someone with a misfire while hunting or going to the range, your CCW insurance will not cover your legal expenses. These are considered negligent acts that could have been avoided with proper care. CCW insurance only works if you use your firearm in self-defense.
  • Replace your firearm if it is damaged or stolen. Concealed carry insurance is meant to cover legal fees, not to replace a stolen or damaged concealed carry gun.

Is Concealed Carry Insurance Worth the Money?

While plans vary in cost and scope, CCW insurance policies or concealed carry associations can cost anywhere between $120 to clear over $500 per year. This may seem like a lot to spend, especially if the chance of needing to use your firearm is low.

While we don’t have a definitive answer to the question “is concealed carry insurance worth it,” there are certainly pros to having a solid policy to fall back on if you are ever forced to use your firearm to defend your life.

3 Pros of Having Concealed Carry Insurance:

  1. Coverage for the cost of bail bonds, court fees, attorney fees, expert witness fees, private investigator fees and civil damages. As mentioned earlier, the costs of court cases are enormous. Many policies have unlimited criminal protection amounts and varying civil coverage.
  2. Access to a network of lawyers and attorneys. Some CCW insurance companies have a network of defense lawyers to help you find a professional who has experience and knowledge in self-defense cases.
  3. Funds to help cover daily expenses while you are in court or other legal proceedings. Many CCW insurance policies include “per concealed carry diem” coverage to help cover for everyday expenses your family may encounter while you’re out of work.

While we can’t cover the pros and cons of the most popular options here, it’s critical that you review the policy of your choice carefully before signing on the dotted line. Just like any other insurance, you want to make sure the coverage you purchase meets your needs in a legal defense.
